Health in the Hood has an awesome story to tell. Find out how we got started and what you can do to help us continue our mission to connect communities to wellness.

Our Story

Health in the Hood is a 501(c)3 but more importantly, we are a part of the communities we work in. We implement and maintain community gardens in food deserts, along with nutrition and fitness education, in order to break barriers between low-income communities and healthy choices.

By providing community gardens and health education in low-income neighborhoods, we are putting children on the path to healthy futures, giving parents valuable information and creating environments that support healthy choices.

Health in the Hood gardens are readily available and provide produce free of charge to the residents. In each neighborhood, we work with a local partner and hire a resident to care for the garden daily as the Master Gardener. Each garden is as unique as its community, but this basic model follows through.

Our gardens are community-driven so that they can be the most sustainable. Not only do they increase access to fresh fruits and vegetables, they are used as living classrooms for kids to connect to their food choices better and learn to grow their own!
